Nikkei Electronics Asia reports that a Fujitsu investigation showed that a reaction between water and a resin including the red allotrope of the element happened on some integrated circuits used on the hard disks.
When a protective covering broke down, phosphoric acid was created which attacked metallic elements on the hard drives.
That eventually led to short circuits which caused the failure, according to the report, more details of which can be found here.
