Hardware: Turn your Radeon 9700 Pro into a 9800 Pro!
Posted on Saturday, March 22 @ W. Europe Standard Time by sensemann

ATI

The guys at the german website 3dchips.de have posted an article on how to mod your 9700Pro into a 9800 Pro pretty easy!

I guess you're all familiar with the mod from a 9500 to 9700. If not, check this page.

The new mod uses new optimized drivers for the 9700Pro with a driver path designed for the "Radeon 9800/Pro" series.

The guys have modded a normal 9700 Pro (Connect3D) in a 9800, and you'll see from the benchmarks that it worked ;)

You can find the whole story here. It includes a detailed report on how to do this mod, and benchmarks. However, the article is in german.
This is a babelfished translation of the page. If you guys want it in proper english or if you have any problems leave a comment. I can do that if there's enough interest.

nope, I don't think so, although i cannot verify it. I've found at least 5 independant pages that claim that they got it working.

Cool! I hope I can try this mod soon...
but maybe I might slip up because of translation error, so I might as well wait until someone does a good translation. heheh

Actually you can get the same results by downloading the latest Omega drivers, it has the 9800 hack built into it. My 9700 pros shows up as a 9800pro and the 2.1 smoothvision. And it works fantastic

New in Omega 2.5.88a/2.4.07a
* Based on the official 9088 and 6307 ATI drivers (Catalyst 3.2)
* Added support for the following chipsets :Radeon 9500 non Pro Radeon 9800 Pro
* The SMARTGART control panel has been RE-ENABLED, ATI asked me to re-enable it as a favor, so I did it.
* Fixed the FPD not showing in the Display CP.
* Removed various tweaks as they where no longer necessary.
* Added the 9500/9700 to 9800 hack, now the 9800 pipeline is enabled by default in the drivers, there is going to be a BIG speed increase in D3D for these cards.
* Changed some stuff in the drivers setup, please read the installer options more carefully now, they include some important info and it's now better explained for newbies.

the mod doesn't work for me... I've tried the mod with Riva Tuner too, but it still says ATi Radeon 9700 Pro 128mb in the adaptor information. The Omega drivers change my adaptor type to 9700/9500 series and 9800 in the adaptor information but not 9800 Pro... and my 3dmark scores are lower than the normal 3.2 catalyst drivers. :?
