It's a sad and natural fact that mobile graphics always trail their desktop counterparts. But today, at least, mobile gamers have decent options. ATI's Mobility Radeon 9000 brought DX8 to the laptop. Notebooks based on the GPU, including Dell's Inspiron 8200 and 8500, deliver solid gaming performance in a machines you can carry under one arm. Arch-competitor nVidia also has its GeForce FX Go just entering the market, as well as its older GeForce4 Go.

Now ATI has improved the mobile gamer's lot with its latest mobile GPU, the Mobility Radeon 9600 Pro. This GPU brings DX9 support, improved power management and better performance – many 3D games saw a 2X performance increase.

The desktop-based Radeon 9600 Pro recently took top honors in our price/performance review of the current crop of GPUs, but will this mobile variant of that core be enough to keep ATI in the top spot in the mobile segment? Read on to find out.
