Hardware: Intels discontinues Rambus-based chipsets
Posted by sensemann on Tuesday, May 20 @ 15:55:53 CEST
|
|
Intel recently decided to cease production of its 850E and 860 chipset, moving further away from the Rambus DRAM (RDRAM) standard, motherboard sources revealed. The 850E and 860 chipsets are Intel’s two RDRAM-based products, designed for the desktop and server/workstation sectors, respectively.
The growing trend for low-price PCs has boosted the popularity of DDR memory, Intel’s local agents said. Overall, they expect Intel’s decision to have little impact on the market, as RDRAM chipsets primarily target the top-end market and Intel is expected to continue meeting client demand if required.

Intel disclosed an electrical problem Monday that can cause computers using its flagship Itanium 2 processor to behave erratically or crash.
Customers can sidestep the problem by setting the processor to run at a lower speed, said company spokeswoman Barbara Grimes, and Intel will replace the processor if customers want. The glitch affects only some chips, and then only in the case of "a specific set of operations in a specific sequence with specific data," Grimes said.

Hardware: Intel to Release Celeron 2.50 and 2.60GHz Next Month
Posted by Adek on Wednesday, May 07 @ 10:45:08 CEST
|
|
Intel Corporation reportedly plans to continue accelerating Celeron family of processors next month, before that it will slash the prices on its Celeron chips, introduce the Pentium 4 3.20GHz processor, i865 (Springdale) chipset series and also cut the prices of its Pentium 4 CPUs.
The Inquirer has found out that mighty Intel will introduce 2.50 and 2.60GHz Celeron processors on the 25th of June for $89 and $102 respectively. Note that the top Celeron chip will cost another $1 lower compared to the price of current 2.40GHz Celeron, hence, overall ASP of the family may be lower depending on the demand for lower-end or higher-end chips. A month before the launch, Intel is cutting the prices on its current line of lower-end microprocessors. The Celeron 2.40, 2.30, 2.20 and 2.10GHz chips will be priced at $85, $79, $74 and $74 respectively. Looks like 2.10 and 2.0GHz chips will soon be phased out and 2.20GHz will become Intel’s minimal offering.

Hardware: Intel Tanglewood to Be 10 Times Faster Than Madison
Posted by Adek on Monday, April 28 @ 18:52:34 CEST
|
|
According to the executive from Intel Corporation, code-named Montecito processor, Intel’s first dual-core chip, that is due in 2005, will be two or three times faster than today’s Madison CPUs coming out later this year. Furthermore, the Tanglewood processor available in 2006 or 2007 will already be ten times faster compared to this year’s most powerful IA64 processor. In fact, Otellini did not said that this would be code-named Tanglewood, but referred to it as “future Itanium” processor, but everybody got the idea right.
We do not know much about Tanglewood CPU at the moment. Based on preliminary details issued by an unofficial source we can figure out that Tanglewood processor will have more than two cores on the chip and will be able to offer even more performance than the predecessor. Keeping in mind that such microprocessor will reportedly consume less energy than Montecito, we can assume that they will be made using thinner technology, presumably 65nm; expect higher frequencies in this case.

Hardware: Intel makes Ant Hill an Opteron competitor
Posted by viper on Sunday, April 27 @ 17:59:01 CEST

BAIT FISHING for conspiracy theorists is probably a game that VPs play. Every now and then they let something slip out that leaves the INQ ready and waiting to bite. The latest worm on the hook comes courtesy of InternetNews.com and its a really juicy one. One Sun VP reckons Intel has another 64bit architecture waiting in the wings.
Shahin Khan, Sun Vice President of High Performance and Technical Computing (HPTC), said of 64bit processor architectures, "there is Itanium, Opteron, and what Intel calls Ant Hill, so there are three different sets of instructions." Ant Hill? Thats a new one.
Yamhill is the name that has done the rounds. Or *T as it became known as, apparently. So is the Sun exec talking about Yamhill and just messing it up or maybe calling it by an internal Sun nickname?
