"Unfortunately the PX-708UF does not have the polish we have come to
expect from Plextor products. We gave the PX-504UF a much better score
because it was the first external DVD writer developed by Plextor and
overall was a good first attempt. But we expected their updated version
the PX-708UF to address some of the issues their predecessor had and
this simply was not the case. The PX-708UF is a relatively fast and
reliable drive, but it lacks the ability to daisy chain other FireWire
devices through it and has a very loud internal fan. Priced at $299.99
we would recommend holding off for Sonys external 8X drive which was
just announced while writing this review."

Although Fall is a pretty dull season, the optical drives market
looks brisk. You can see not only clones of NECs and Pioneers
drives, but also unique solutions from companies which earlier made a
good showing. Some time ago we tested Toshibas drive and today we
have a long awaited multiformat DVD recorder from Plextor. The new
drive is not an original solution, but its a current leader in the
sphere of DVD recorders. This is the first drive able to burn DVD+R
media at 8X

Designtechnica got their hands on the PX-708A DVD±R/RW and gave it a run in the labs. We also reviewed the drive a few weeks ago. (click the previous link for the whole review)
"The Plextor PlexWriter PX-708A is currently the fastest DVD+/-RW drive on the market with its 8X DVD+R write performance. We experienced no problems burning content to any of our test media and were able to heavily multi-task while doing so. The included software suite is very robust and complete compared to other DVD writers on the market. It should be a while until we see the next generation of dual format DVD writers hit the market so if you have been waiting to make a DVD writer purchase, now is the time and the PX-708A is what you will want.”

Just a few days ago, Anandtech did the first exclusive review of the drive. Now, we did our best to finish the review-article as soon as possible, and to try covering all the aspects of the unit. "Read results are great, as well as the write and re-write ones. We actually somehow knew what we should expect from CD-R, CD-RW and DVD recording, except 8X DVD+R recording which is absolutely fast. As long as you have compatible media, now it should be a pleasure writing DVDs. True 8X DVD+R media should be soon on shelves. 4X DVD+RW media is also on the way. By then you will have to set to 4X media recommended by Plextor, if you consider burning 8X DVDs."

AnandTech released a nice review of the Plextor 708A.
Here is a short preview:
Philips spearheaded the DVD+R forum into 8X DVD+R speeds back in July, but today, we get to see the first actual 8X DVD+R drive in action. Who wouldn’t want to burn 4.38GB of data in 8 minutes? Oh, and you can do it on 4X media too.

Plextor released two new bios updates, one for the PX-W4824TA and one for the PX-W4824TU.

Plextor announced the external PX-504UF DVD+RW drive to arrive to retail late in June for about $257. Supportnig USB2.0 and IEEE1394, it works under Windows 98 SE/ME/2000/XP.
The speeds are: 4х DVD+R write, 2.4х DVD+RW write, 16х CD-R write, 10х CD-RW write; 12х DVD read, 40х CD read. Besides DVD+VR support, the model understands DVD-VIDEO (from Dolby Digital). Finally, with dimensions of 184x265x52mm, it weighs about 2kg.
