Reviews: VIA KT600: Asus A7V600 Review
Posted by viper on Thursday, July 03 @ 10:53:43 CEST

Chris from AMDZone has posted the first review of the Asus A7V600 based on the new VIA KT600 chipset.
Gigabit Ethernet, SATA and PATA RAID, 6 channel sound, and a 400MHz FSB bring many improvements to the VIA platform. Asus has taken advantage of all of them. They have also included plenty of features to overclock and tweak performance in the bios. They also include plenty of helpful software and utilities including the new Instant Music Lite. Stability of the board was also excellent, and Asus always provides great bios support with new bios files several times a year.

VIA Hyperion drivers are suitable for any VIA chipset and all Microsoft Windows Operating Systems.
Fixed:
- Fixed setup issue while S-ATA function was disabled under Win9x
Note: Win95/98/98SE are now relatively old operating systems, and drivers are no longer optimized for those operating systems. Many users of VIA chipsets who run Win95/98/98SE report that using an older version, such as VIA 4in1 version 4.35, they experience a more responsive system.

VIA Technologies is said to have decided to terminate the operations of its VIA Platform Solutions Division (VPSD) and will transfer all the division’s products and assets to First International Computer (FIC) now that it has settled its patent infringement lawsuits with Intel, according to sources.
VIA denied the rumor that it will close the division, but confirmed that it is indeed planning to hand over its P4 motherboard business to another company, on which it has not decided yet, and let the VPSD concentrate on developing mini-ITX EPIA boards.

TheInquirer: We're surprised and shocked to see the first benchmarks of a reference board based on the KT600 chipset.
In most tests, apart from purely graphics, the KT600 outscored the new Nforce 2 400 Ultra a sea-change from the performance of the KT400A, we must say.

Hardware: VIA to Transfer Eden Platform to 200MHz FSB
Posted by Adek on Saturday, May 03 @ 11:37:14 CEST
|
|
Eden platforms offered by VIA for small quiet PCs, tablets and web-terminals can't boast high performance nowadays. However, due to a special CLE266 core logic they are very functional. These platforms support DDR200/DDR266 SDRAM, are equipped with UniChrome graphics core and work with VIA C3 processors working at 133MHz FSB.
By the end of the year VIA is going to enhance its Eden platforms quite significantly. For this purpose they will develop a new chipset. It will be CM400. CM400 will represent a continuation of the CLE266, but will differ a lot from the predecessor. The major innovation introduced in the new CM400 will be 200MHz FSB support, which VIA is going to implement in its future C3 CPUs. Moreover, CM400 will support more up-to-date memory: DDR266/DDR333/DDR400. As a result, CM400 will ensure much higher performance and VIA will be able to position its CM400 based platforms for the Performance sector.

Today VIA chipsets are used with VT8235 South Bridges. However, they will be very soon replaced with VT8237 and then with VT8239 chips. In the upcoming South Bridges VIA will focus on the development of ATA controllers and integrated sound solutions.
VT8235 chip used today can be connected to the chipset North Bridge via the V-Link 8x or PCI bus, which makes them compatible with the older chipsets. VT8235 supports two ATA/133 channels, 6 USB 2.0 ports, 10/100Mbit Ethernet and 6-channel AC'97 sound. These South Bridges are designed in 487-pin BGA package.

Software: VIA Hyperion 4in1 4.45

Thanks to our friends from TweakTown for telling me!
VIA have led the way in pioneering the unified driver set. The VIA 4in1 drivers, often known as a VIA 4in1 service pack have been the mainstay of VIA systems for years - optimizing stability and comparability. Today (10 December 2002) is an historic occasion, as VIA changes the name to VIA Hyperion 4in1 drivers and launches the driver set, optimized for performance for VIA's latest chipsets. The name Hyperion will most certainly supercede the name 4in1 all together in the future, but "4in1" has been kept in the name for identification sake. The version numbers also continue on from the 4in1 driver series so as not to confuse our customers.
